Senator Mike Doherty

Senator Michael J. Doherty is serving his second term in the New Jersey Senate as a representative of the 23rd Legislative District.  The Senator is a member of the Senate Education and Judiciary Committees.  He previously served four terms in the New Jersey General Assembly.

Senator Doherty was the prime sponsor of a Constitutional Amendment to require voter approval on State contract bonding and the prime sponsor of a college credit transfer bill that provides for a seamless transfer of credits from New Jersey’s county colleges to its four year institutions.  The Senator is a proponent for a fair educational funding formula that takes the income tax fund and distributes the fund equally to each student.  He has introduced the Fair School Funding amendment that will remove the Court from decisions on how the State funds our schools and will provide equal school aid for each student.      

The Senator was born in Point Pleasant New Jersey, and attended public schools in Glen Ridge.  He is a 1985 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point.  He served in the United States Army from 1985 to 1993, achieving the rank of Captain.  In 1993, Senator Doherty graduated from Seton Hall University School of Law.  He is a member of the bars of New Jersey and New York, and is a registered patent attorney authorized to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, practicing in Washington, NJ.  Senator Doherty and his wife, Linda, have three sons who have served or are serving on active duty in the military.
