 Assemblyman Erik Peterson
Born and raised in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, Freeholder Peterson moved to Hunterdon County in 1990. Once settled into Lambertville, Freeholder Peterson soon realized that Hunterdon County was the perfect place to raise a family and enjoy life. In 2001 Freeholder Peterson and his wife Jenni moved from Lambertville to Milford. The Petersons out grew their Milford home and have since moved to an old farmhouse in Franklin Township where they reside with their four children Sophie, Clay, Veronica and Samantha.
Freeholder Peterson, an attorney with offices in Readington, has always been interested in politics. Upon moving to the county Freeholder Peterson volunteered for the Republican Party and soon thereafter was appointed a Republican County Committeeman for Lambertville and was elected President of the Hunterdon County Young Republicans. Freeholder Peterson until recently was a member of the Hunterdon County Republican County Committeeman.
A firm believer in serving your community and not being served by it, Freeholder Peterson has volunteered at the Hunterdon County YMCA as a swim coach, is a member of the Milford Lions Club, Hunterdon County Chamber of Commerce and a former Trustee for Pedals for Progress and is currently on the Board of the United Way. As President of the Milford Lions, Freeholder Peterson led his Lions Club to have one of its most successful fund raising years enabling the club to provide much needed financial support to the hearing and sight impaired, local community groups and to local families in need of assistance.
In 2005, Freeholder Peterson was elected to the Hunterdon County Freeholder Board. Freeholder Peterson ran on a platform of Fiscal Conservatism; Enhancing Hunterdon’s quality of life through farmland and open space preservation and open and honest government. He has fulfilled those promises.
- As Freeholder Director he led the Board’s adoption of the 2008 County Budget that is 2.5 Million Dollars LESS than the County’s 2007 Budget. This was the first time in a generation that the County Budget was reduced from the prior year.
- Freeholder Peterson in cooperation with County Counsel and the Planning Department worked to make Hunterdon County #1 in total farms preserved and #1 in total farmland acres preserved in New Jersey.
- One of the first accomplishments of Freeholder Peterson was moving Board discussions out of the back rooms and into the public domain improving the ethical standards of the Board. He also successfully succeeded in the publishing of the Executive Session minutes of the board for the first time in 25 years. Freeholder Peterson strongly believes that the voters deserve to know how and why decisions are made.
As a Proven Fiscal Conservative, Freeholder Peterson is running for
- Assembly in the 23rd district to:
- Continue to pursue cost savings and limited government to keep taxes down;
- Take the successes of our Farmland Preservation program and apply the same principals to the County’s Open Space and Parks Acquisition Program and creating a program that works in cooperation with every Municipality in the County. Keeping Hunterdon green and protecting our environment for future generations.
- Continue to work to make County government more open and responsible to the public.
Freeholder Peterson has a bachelor degree in business management with a concentration in finance and economics from North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina and a law degree from Temple University School of Law in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
